Australia's largest cyclone, Alan, was moving towards the southern end of its destructive path in just 16 hours.

In some areas, with the greatest risk, water was not just flowing in from below, but also over the top of the land.

This week there were some small reports of rain, but the weather is expected to improve over the next few days.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported that there were still several large cyclones on the move.

"Brought-on rainfall will be heavy with a variety of factors that all come together to build the strength of the cyclone, said the bureau.

"We expect the cyclone to move inland, which is possible due to the strength of the cyclone's winds and proximity to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

"This will allow it to become a cyclone with a high energy and the risk of flooding associated with high winds will continue.

"At the same time, there will be some low-lying areas affected by high winds which will then have a lower potential for flood and damage."

However, with no cyclone seen at the moment, the rain and water is unlikely to be a permanent solution, despite the weather office's predictions for the next week.

The bureau said on Thursday that the weather was not expected to continue in the rainforests or northern forests for much of the week.

"We expect this part of the country to be wet for most of the week and rain, although less intense, will occur again through Friday and continue into Saturday, and we expect rain to return from the east on Monday, with areas where rain will fall in the south and north becoming dry," the bureau said.
