Brita's smart pitcher is $20 more than an identical Brita pitcher with no smarts to speak of, so the question here is whether or not that Amazon Dash integration is worth the extra 20 bucks. In theory, it's a useful bit of automation -- especially if you already buy replacement filters on the regular. In practice, it isn't all that precise, and more than anything seems designed to get people to buy new filters more often than they would out of habit alone. It certainly isn't something that anyone needs, but it might make a decent gift for a friend who's picky about filtered water.

How I rated these filtered water bottles
I considered five important criteria when using these filtered water bottles: filtering, materials, taste, ease of use and clean-up. These are all factors you should consider when looking for a filtered water bottle -- you'll want to purchase one that suits the activity you plan to use it for. 

The only major difference between the three? The Larq and the CrazyCap both have two modes, while the Mahaton only has one. If you plan on using your self-cleaning water bottle with outdoor sources of water, you may want to opt for the Larq or the CrazyCap since they have overdrive modes that kill even more micro-organisms. 

Despite its poor filter attachment and sour taste, the Waterwell does have some good properties. It's easy to use, with the same setup as most of the other bottles on the list: bottle, cap, filter. The filter detaches easily and the bottle opening is large enough to insert a standard dish scrubber.

Be advised that the Toddy is a tall contraption, particularly while straining grounds, so it won't fit underneath low kitchen cabinets. Brewing with the Toddy is also a manual affair and takes some practice to perfect. 

What to look for in a self-cleaning water bottle
You should consider five important factors when choosing a UV-powered water bottle like these: Purification, taste, design, ease of use, capacity and battery life. If you decide to purchase a self-cleaning water bottle, you'll want one that kills as many microbes as possible, produces a good taste, is easy to hold and transport, and lasts for a decent period of time on one charge. 

Filtering: What filtering mechanism was used and how well did the bottle filter the water? Were there any particles left in the water after filtering? Water "after filtering" means the water that comes out of the drinking spout or straw. 

The Lifestraw Go is made of BPA-free plastic throughout. Overall, the Lifestraw Go feels pretty sturdy. I prefer the durability of stainless steel, but it's lightweight and comes with a carabiner, so it would make a good backpacking water bottle.

The CrazyCap also has an autoclean function, which turns on six times per day for 20 seconds. CrazyCap says this periodical exposure to UV-C light prevents microbial growth and odor, and it seems to work: After three days of use, I didn't notice any smells or films inside the bottle. Additionally, water from the CrazyCap bottle tasted significantly better than water from the tap faucet.

It's sleek and aesthetically appealing -- my only complaint was that there's no groove or curve to fit your hand. You could always purchase the limited-edition bottle sleeve to solve that problem.
