Creating A Crochet Baby Blanket Gift

We have a wonderful family tradition of everyone making at least one homemade gift for Christmas to give another family member. My children have all made at least one blanket to give a family member. The fabrics are fun to choose and put together as we think of the personality of the family members. We have a daughter very much into music so there are always musical motif fabrics in her quilts, a son who loves insects so a quilt with ants or other insects are often made for him. There is the wonderful John Deere fabrics to make beautiful quilts. If you have a hobby or interest there is sure to be a fabric just right to personalize your blanket.

For making perfectly straight cuts, choose a thick, clear acrylic ruler. A good size to start with is a 6x24" rectangular ruler marked in 1/4" increments.

Blanket Quilt Design is the next step in the process of creating the perfect baby quilt. Different types of quilts require different materials in different amounts; therefore it is essential to have your quilt designed before you purchase materials. Another variable is time: patchwork quilts take a lot more time and dedication than tie quilts, and a crocheted quilt takes even more time than a patchwork. Quilters should be prepared for the amount of work they are going to dedicate to the quilt.

Always use a rotary cutter with a cutting mat specifically designed for it. In addition to protecting your work surface, the mat helps keep the fabric from shifting while you cut. Start with a 17x23" mat marked with a 1" grid, hash marks at 1/8" increments, and 45 and 60 degree angles.

I scanned the photos and then printed them onto photo transfer sheets. I ironed the transfer on to a piece of white material that was just a little bit larger than the picture. The white square and photo was sewn on top of one of the 12" blue squares. I then added eyelet trim and blue ribbon around each photo. Putting dark blue ribbon on a light blue square, and light blue ribbon on a dark blue square.

Next up is the crib sheet. These are usually fitted. If it is not fitted, don't bother. Your child may sleep like an angel, or they may move around a lot. Either way, a fitted sheet will keep itself in place instead of getting wrapped up around your child, which is about as bad as it sounds.
