I'm not very much of a gambler. I work hard for my money and I'm not very fond of losing it. My friend Patrick likes to gamble, sometimes too much. Once in a while we like to go to one of the casinos around town and lose some of our money. The last time we went to the Lumiere Casino in downtown St. Louis. The casino opened not too long ago and it is billed as being the casino that is closest to Las Vegas in St. Louis. Other than the lack of showgirls, this is probably true. There's a big fancy hotel next to it and it has all of the other amenities that a Las Vegas place would have.

Last Thursday we went down there. It had been the first time I had been to the new casino. They had a special drawing to win $60,000 and the first thing we did was to enter that. This was after I got my casino card that you could use to play all of the games with. It used to be that you bought tokens at the casino and then put them in the slots and were paid in tokens if you won, and then redeemed them for cash at the cashier. Now things have changed. You put your card and cash into the machine and it pays you out with a ticket that you put in another machine and it gives you cash.

I like to play the slot machines and sometimes the poker machines, but Patrick likes to shoot craps. Craps is just too complicated for me, all those hard 6's and soft what evers. It is nice that you can continue playing without betting more of your own money though. Now, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, someone in St. Louis thinks we don't have enough casinos in the downtown area, we need another one.

I really do think that someone is trying to turn St. Louis into Las Vegas, or at least Reno. According to the Post, "Pinnacle Entertainment made the announcement Monday concerning its new River City Casino, a $375 million gambling facility in Lemay just south of River Des Peres." Pinnacle also owns the nearby Lumiere Casino. The new casino, River City, is scheduled to open in March of 2010. Using up more of the limited space downtown seems a little foolhardy to me.

The land could be put too much better use, http://slotoff.com/ (slotoff.com) like a public park, but that would generate revenue like the casino. It's not a very good idea to put it right in a flood plain either. Source: http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/business/stories.nsf/story/5A6FF7D8EBDD834C8625768D00088C19?OpenDocument
